Hurricane Laura is responsible for 18 U.S. deaths. Louisiana has the highest death toll at 14,eight of which were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning from generators used due to power outages,Gov. John Bel Edwards said during a briefing Sunday afternoon. Laura was also responsible for four deaths in Texas and 23 in the Caribbean.
Laura made landfall near Cameron,Louisiana,early Thursday as a Category 4 storm,bringing heavy winds and a storm surge of over nine feet. Laura was the first recorded hurricane to make landfall as a Category 4 in southwest Louisiana.

Cleanup continues in the hard-hit parishes of Lake Charles,Cameron and Calcasieu,where homes were flooded,windows blown out and roofs were ripped off of homes and businesses. Nearly 308,000 Louisiana homes and businesses remained without power on Monday morning,according to poweroutage.us. Texas had more than 57,700 customers without electricity Monday morning.
More than 180,000 people are also without running water,and at least 183 water systems remain shut down.
